I apologize for the sudden summer hiatus from my blog. Hope everyone is making the most of their summer and staying healthy by loading up on all the wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables available everywhere! However, if you're like me and occasionally take advantage of the other sweet, somewhat sinful, offerings made available to us during this season -yes that's right I sometimes indulge in an ice cream or fruity cocktail on those glorious hot summer nights-there's no need to feel too guilty.
The earth provides us with a natural antidote to help cleanse our body from these intermittent treats. What cool, sweet, juicy and delicious fruit am I talking about? I'm referring to the watermelon of course. Watermelon's high water content helps cleanse the entire body: from the bladder to the blood to the heart. More importantly, its pulp is rich in iron and magnesium, which helps strengthen the liver, our bodies main detoxifying organ. Watermelon also helps the liver to process ammonia, a by-product of protein metabolism, which in turn, reduces burden on the kidneys.
This refreshing pink melon is also loaded with some of the most powerful antioxidants. Vitamin C, A and lycopene help protect our bodies from damage and help reduce the development common and recurring secondary health complications associated with disabilities such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease. These same antioxidants also help reduce the negative effects of macular degeneration.
If that weren't enough, this thirst quenching fruit has a high content of B-vitamins, which our bodies need to produce energy.
An added bonus to those watching their waist line, this delectable fruit is low in calories-only 48 calories a cup-so load up this summer and know you're doing your body a world of guilt-free good!
Got any other great guilt-free foods or recipes you'd like share please write in!
