Issue 28: p. 23 Forumby Louise Daignault At the Paralympic Trials held in Montreal, Quebec, on the weekend of June 1 and 2, 1996, Colin Mathieson emerged as the new hotshot in Canadian wheelchair racing, following another stellar performance at the team trials for the Paralympic Games. Mathieson and Nick Cunningham, also of Winnipeg, were among 19 Canadians named to the Paralympic track and field team. "Colin�s the guy to watch for -- he�s just smoking fast," said Adams, 25, when asked about Canada�s depth in wheelchair racing. "Once he gets a couple of years under his belt, he�s going to be tough." Mathieson, who set personal bests in the 100m and 200m, feels that being compared to Adams is like a hockey player being touted as the next Gretzky! In the Women�s T4 category, Chantal Petitclerc of St-Foy, Qu�bec, equipped with a brand new chair, blew away the field. She came away with all the honours, capturing first place in every event she competed in, followed closely by Diane Roy in second place. In the T3 category, Colette Bourgonje of Saskatoon qualified in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events. In the field events, Hal Merrill and Jacques Martin finished first in their respective categories, qualifying for the Paralympic Games in Atlanta.
