Polio immunization now prevents polio in most North Americans. However, many adults are still living with the effects of polio contracted in childhood, such as weakness or paralysis in the limbs, or in the muscles controlling speech, swallowing and breathing. In addition, many individuals who thought they were fully recovered from polio are, decades later, experiencing progressive symptoms such as muscle weakness and fatigue. This is post-polio syndrome. | |
