It occurs during the first four weeks of pregnancy. The defect may leave the spinal cord exposed, which usually results in some damage to it at the point of exposure. This limits the brain signals travelling to and from parts of the body below the point where the damage has occurred. The effects from spina bifida are extremely varied, ranging from significant physical and intellectual disability to minor bladder problems correctable by surgery. The most common effects are limited use of lower limbs, bowel and bladder limitations, and average intelligence. Spina bifida is usually accompanied by one or more other conditions, such as hydrocephalus. | |
